I am a grown up, I don't need help!

Have you ever read something as an adult and had no clue what you had just read? I am sure your next thought might have been "I am an adult, I can't ask someone for help!". If you have ever been here, you are not alone. Even as a teacher I have trouble with technical reading, and I admit, sometimes I will shove it in a drawer and like Scarlett O'Hara, "Think about it tomorrow". Insurance documents always trip me up, legal documents are another hard one for me. With that being said, sometimes it is necessary to deal with immediately, so, what do we do when we as adults struggle with reading? Let me hear some of the things you might struggle with and then we can figure out where to go for assistance! Don't be shy, I went first!

  1. Well, personally the list goes on and on for me. Legal documents and insurance papers are a big one. I also even have trouble reading and understanding bills such as phone and cable ( like what we are paying for and why). My husband handles all the bills but when we get them I'm constantly asking what is what cause I read them but frankly don't understand all of them ( taxes, etc) It makes things irritating for both of us but mainly me because he just shrugs it off and I'm left feeling like I'm two years old.

  2. I get it! Even as a reading teacher, I feel the same way. I have to admit that in my younger years, I would ignore it if I couldn't figure it out. Now that I am older, I understand that the world doesn't work that way! I think using context clues and understanding root words were what helped me the most.
